Your Step-by-Step Medicare Checklist

By Jessie A. Navalta, Owner/Broker — July 2026

If your 65th birthday is coming up, you’ve probably noticed the mail piling up — postcards, official-looking envelopes, and plenty of confusing offers. Take a breath. Enrolling in Medicare is very manageable when you know the timeline. Here’s the plain-English version.

First: Know Your Enrollment Window

Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) lasts 7 months: the 3 months before your birthday month, your birthday month itself, and the 3 months after. Enrolling during the 3 months before your birthday month is usually the smoothest path, because your coverage can start the first day of your birthday month.

Why timing matters: Missing your window without other qualifying coverage can lead to late-enrollment penalties that stay with you for as long as you have Medicare — so it pays to get this right the first time.

Your Checklist, Month by Month

6 months before your birthday

Decide if you’ll enroll at 65 or delay. If you (or your spouse) are still working and have employer coverage from a larger employer, you may be able to delay some parts of Medicare without penalty. This is worth confirming for your specific situation — don’t guess.

Make a list of your doctors and prescriptions. You’ll need this to compare plans later. Include dosages for your medications.

3 months before your birthday

Enroll in Medicare Parts A and B through Social Security (online at ssa.gov, by phone, or at a local office). If you’re already receiving Social Security benefits, you’ll typically be enrolled automatically — watch your mail for your Medicare card.

Start comparing your coverage options. This is the big decision: pairing Original Medicare with a Supplement (Medigap) plan and a Part D drug plan, or choosing a Medicare Advantage plan instead. Each path has real trade-offs in cost, flexibility, and provider access.

1–2 months before your birthday

Choose and enroll in your plan(s). Check that your doctors are in-network (for Advantage plans) and your medications are covered on the plan’s drug list.

Confirm your Part B start date so there’s no gap between your current coverage and Medicare.

Your birthday month and after

Watch for your cards — your red, white, and blue Medicare card plus any plan cards.

Bring your new cards to appointments and the pharmacy starting the month your coverage begins.

Set a reminder for fall. Plans change every year, and an annual review during the fall enrollment window keeps your coverage matched to your needs.

The Three Mistakes I See Most Often

Assuming employer coverage always lets you delay. The rules depend on employer size and the type of coverage — COBRA and retiree coverage generally do not count. Verify before you delay anything.

Picking a plan because a neighbor has it. The right plan depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget. What’s perfect for your neighbor may be a poor fit for you.

Skipping drug coverage because you don’t take medications. Going without creditable drug coverage can trigger a penalty later. There are low-premium options that protect you.

Turning 65 and Want a Guide?

I walk Southwest Florida seniors — and clients nationwide by phone or video — through this exact checklist, step by step, at no cost to you.
